The year 2025 has arrived. With the New Year Maryland has implemented new laws relating to traffic, leaf blowers, opioid emergencies and Medicare eligibility for prothesis.
The Laws in Maryland in effect as of January 2025 are as follows:
-Maryland Road Worker Protection Act
As of January 2025, fines have doubled for speeding in Roadwork Zones with Road Workers Present. The fines are as follows: 12-15 Miles per hour over the work zone speed limit= $120.00, 16-19 miles over the work zone speed limit= $160.00 and 20-29 miles over the work zone speed limit = $180.00, 30-39 miles over the work zone = $540.00 and 40 miles over the work zone speed limit= $500.00. This law was passed to protect road workers from fatalities due to driers speeding in the work zone.
-Leaf Blowers
As of January 2025, Anne Arundel County has implemented a ban on gas leaf blowers. Individuals and companies who use gas leaf blowers will be fined $200.00. Montgomery County Maryland has a new law that goes into effect on July 1, 2025.
-Security Guard Licensing
Effective January 1. Newly designated security guard employers must also register online and submit proof of insurance with the Maryland State Police Licensing Division. The existing paper-based Professional License applications will be replaced by an entirely electronic application submission and fee collection process.
-Opioid Overdose and Opioid Related Emergencies
HB 1155 and SB 1071 require hospitals to follow specific protocol when treating opioid related emergencies. Mandates include requiring hospitals to use uniform practices for screening and diagnosing opioid emergencies. The laws will also require hospitals to refer patients who were treated for opioid emergencies to providers for further treatment before discharging them. Orthoses and prosthesis Coverage
Maryland House Bill 865, also known as the “So Every Body Can Move Act,” requires Medicaid in Maryland to provide coverage for orthoses and prostheses and replacement prostheses starting January 1, 2025. It also prohibits insurers from imposing higher co-payments for orthoses and prostheses coverage.
